Matt discovers Knowify
Matt Curatola first discovered Knowify in 2015, shortly after it had launched to the public. He had been looking for something to help him get a handle on the many moving pieces of his plumbing business, but had struggled to find a product that actually addressed HIS needs. “Everything I looked at was for the service guys, or the guys doing small jobs. I do construction work, so those systems weren’t going to work for me. When I found Knowify, I was excited because it seemed to focus on construction.” Sure enough, over the next several months, Matt and his office manager, Tina, began to move all of their historically paper-based processes into Knowify. Matt knew right away that he’d set himself up for a more efficient business: everything was suddenly at his fingertips, all in one place.
Bidding to make a profit
“It’s done wonders for my bidding process,” Matt says. He loves having the ability to go back quickly to similar jobs his company has completed in the past to see where he may have underbid or overbid certain items. This review/update process has helped him improve as an estimator, and Knowify’s templating system has made him faster. All in all, going from paper-based processes to having easy access to his entire business at the touch of a button has made life much easier for him.
Not just lucky numbers
As a numbers guy, Matt isn’t just checking the numbers when it comes to bidding, he is checking them the whole way through. It has certainly paid off. “I’m more cost efficient now. Prior to Knowify I probably didn’t check what we spent until the job was done and closed and then I’d want to go back and see what the profit was versus the original bid. Now I’m constantly looking: like I said, it’s click of a button.” It certainly can be fun, and maybe even a bit addicting, to be able to see what you are spending on both your labor and materials in real time throughout the course of a job. “I’m constantly watching the spending, so I can see if there was a mistake. I’ll know right away if at 70% of my job and I’ve spent 90% of my budget, a flag goes up and I dig in.”
Tracking numbers in real time has real advantages
Matt shares one particular story that really highlights the value of real-time business intelligence for contractors. Part-way through a project, he discovered that he was way over budget. After taking a closer look in Knowify, he found that his team was doing additional work for the client that was not in the original scope of work proposed. “I noticed I was way over budget and it didn’t make sense. So I looked into it further on Knowify, and discovered that my guys had done extra work. I was able to get a change order out immediately. Catching that was worth thousands of dollars to me.” Had Matt not seen the real-time information on job spending in Knowify, he would have lost money on the project. Luckily, he WAS using Knowify, and it saved him thousands of dollars!
Matt continues to use Knowify as his plumbing business expands. We are so grateful to have been working with Matt and MPC Plumbing since our early days and look forward to seeing how Matt uses our newest features to catch issues and run his business efficiently.
